I bought this camera primarily to use in a claymation class that I was taking. I've used a dslr before (a Sony Alpha) so I'm fairly familiar with their controls and workflow.
The Rebel T3 has an impressive range of functionality. All the basic (and not so basic) manual controls, plus an option to take decent video (minus external microphone or many options).
It worked fine for me for exactly one month, but now every time I try to take a picture I get "Err 30", which apparently means the shutter mechanism is toast. We'll see how they do on doing a warranty repair, but it's disappointing that after such a short amount of usage there is a basic mechanism failure like that. I'd say over that time I've taken maybe 300-400 pictures, and all in a nice controlled studio setting.
Meanwhile, my Sony Alpha which I've had for quite a few years now continues to perform like a champ.
Bought this camera on behalf of my daughter who saved up her cash. She is very pleased. Purchased a telephoto lens at the same time for a $100 discount for the lens. She will get that for Christmas. Can't wait. Camera thus far is decent and the price and shipping were perfect.

What a GREAT camera - right out of the box it was easy to set up and start shooting fabulous pictures. I spent 6 months researching different cameras until I finally found this one. Five stars definitely!
I've known for some time that I wanted a DSLR. I waited until my digital point and shoot died nearly 10 months ago. And then I waited, and waited. When I realized that I was starting to be missing some key moment in my life that I would like to have photos of, I finally pulled the trigger and stepped up to the T3. It may be the entry model for the Canon DSLR line, but for the money the photos are gorgeous with just the kit lens. Adding a Telephoto Zoom is just another level of fun. I needed a camera that would allow me to experiment in manual modes, but one that could still act like a point and shoot for the wife. I love this camera. It's so easy to navigate the menu, which for most is the most complicated part of operating the camera. Without even a read of the manual, I was up and running in 2 minutes testing out all the features. Plain and simple, at this price point, this is a great camera for a beginner or intermediate photographer looking to edge out of the simple point and shoot cameras without spending a small fortune. Be wary though...all the accessories add up quickly.
