I bought this burner for my not so up to dated HP HDX18 laptop which is still running Windows Vista. I expected to need hunting for drivers, but it worked right out of the box. I tested it with CD BurnerXP which is a free burning software compatible with all versions of Windows. Burning bluray disks works fine.
The device is small, thin and light. It doesn't need a separate power supply. It gets it's power over the USB port. The only catch is that it needs more power than a single USB 2.0 specs allow so it comes with a little cable that plugs into two USB ports and on the other end connects to the burner. If your computer or laptop is capable of providing enough power on a single USB port (most will) you are fine just using one USB port.
I bought this to work on my Macs, and I was very surprised to find that one needs to purchase additional software (like Roxio Toast Pro 11). Considering the phenomenal promise of 25GB of data storage at a time, it's still worth it to me. The Blu-ray dvd that comes with the package seems to have software for PC, but not for Mac. I had to phone for support because there was nothing in the package for installation on a Mac. It is "Plug n Play" was the only revelation I received from the call, and that I had to find the software; no recommendations on which ones to buy.
I phoned Roxio/Corel today and they were helpful and it looks like Roxio Toast 11 Pro (aka Titanium) is what I need.
I would have written this after I got everything in place, but want to let other Mac users know what they're getting in to.
Was surprised to see the relatively low rating for this fantastic little gizmo. Seems to mostly be coming from the Mac world, which I cannot speak to. I am using a self-built PC running Windows 7 and the free program ImgBurn. I have yet to burn a bad disc - something I definitely can't say about the DVD-R realm - production quality of BD-Rs is probably still pretty high I guess. I'm using it to back up files and folders, not writing a BluRay playable video disc or using it to play BDs. Since it takes 2 USB ports I mainly just keep it offlined and plug it in when I have enough stuff to back up. I've also restored from the device, so it reads just fine. I've burned maybe around 100 discs from various manufacturers - currently using the cheap Optical Quantum white-tops and have zero complaints. If I burn a video or audio file I can put the disc in my PS3 and it reads it without grousing - which, if you know the super-picky nature of the PS3 is a glowing endorsement. Have also put the burned discs into the BluRay drive on my laptop and no problems there either. So, again, not sure what more you can ask for. Want to burn BD-Rs with the minimum fuss, this thing's your baby. Want something to suck down 900 watts and survive being thrown from the space shuttle then look elsewhere.
I bought this unit for my Asus Zenbook UX32vd. I recorded Asus recovery DVDs and blurays without needing to install any software and they worked very well, tested nd booted from bluray/dvd.
The product quality surprised me, better than expected. I am pleased with this samy product.
Works far better than my LG unit.
