This is a very thorough textbook, discussing materials management. The sixteen in-depth chapters include: Introduction to Materials Management, Production Planning System, Master Scheduling, Material Requirements Planning, Capacity Management, Production Activity Control, Purchasing, Forecasting, Inventory Fundamentals, Order Quantities, Independent Demand Ordering Systems, Physical Inventory and Warehouse Management, Physical Distribution, Products and Processes, Just-in-Time Manufacturing and Lean Production, and Total Quality Management.
There is an abundant amount of charts, graphs, and diagrams to illustrate key points in the text. At the end of every chapter there is a summary, key terms section with page numbers to the terms in the text, questions, and problems. There is an index at the back of the book. Bound in a durable, glossy, hardcover, this textbook is a great resource and learning tool for upper division college courses, focusing on introductory materials management.
I bought this because it is a suggested study item for passing the first exam in the CPIM series of exams. I passed the first exam using this book and the APICS exam manual. I should say that my score was barely passing but I studied for 12 hours the night before the exam while I was at a campsite. So I attribute my lackluster performance to my own study habits and not to the books I purchased. It worked for its intended purpose and I wouldnt have passed without it.
Maybe it's just me, but it's hard to get too excited over a textbook about materials management. That being said, if you need to know materials management, I can't imagine a better place to start. It's the definitive work from everything I've seen and been told about. Good luck to everyone out there studying for their APICS certifications.

It's a good starting point to understand the production dynamics inside the company.
As GM of a manufacturing company, and being closely involved in a migration to SAP, reading this text have been very useful to me during the decision process about the new procedures and the ERP characterization.
It helped me to judge and understand the consultants proposals, and decide with a proper understanding.
I found this book very easy to understand and can well be considered as an all inclusive for APICS module 1 exam (basics of supply chain). I personally think that this will also be a good read for people who are not knowledgeable about whole supply chain realm and want to dip their toe in this world. This book covers all basic real life supply chain strategies and concepts that are neccessary for any supply chain professional to know.
