Chances are memory foam is the right technology to consider when looking for a mattress. If you opt to get one it will take a week or so for your body to adjust. Why? Because you'll find that due to the support the mattress provides, you will be sleeping in new positions that were just to darn uncomfortable with the old mattress. I've had the Sleep Innovations mattress now for about four weeks and after the first week of adjustment, I've been sleeping deeper, sounder, and no longer wake up ten to twelve times a night. In fact I sleep straight through until the alarm rings and I can jump right up from being so rested. So far so good and highly recommended. It's under $500 bucks for God's sake! Best value out there. Oh, the vital stat's. I'm 6'3" tall, weigh 200lbs and have one ruptured disc and one bulging disc so a little banged up from life but this mattress coddles my back perfectly. Good stuff.
Tried the Serta 12" Prodigy at a local retailer, and loved it, but could not justify $2500. Purchased this mattress, instead, and it feels just like the Serta, at least to me. My wife and I both have back trouble, and she has fibromyalgia. We agree that we have never slept better! I find myself dreaming a lot, which means REM sleep is achieved, and I awake refreshed.
First we tried putting this on our old box springs, but they were too old and worn to give proper support. Purchased a frame/box spring here on Amazon, and now it's perfect! Plus, we have a lot of storage space under the bed now.
Even though this arrives in a 90+lb box, I was able to get it up a few steps, into the house, put it on the box springs, and open the box by myself, even with my bad back. Mattress unfolds itself and is ready to sleep on in a short while. The slight odor other reviewers mention was not unpleasant, and lasted less than a day.
We were so excited for our mattress, after reading all the rave reviews on here we thought we were getting something similar to an amazing Tempurpedic bed. When it arrived it "inflated" very quickly and really had very little odor. The first night sleeping on it was amazing, then the second night was still good but the following couple weeks were so miserable that my husband with sciatica was laying on the floor to get relief! We both had terrible neck/shoulder/back pain from these pieces of junk. We bought a $300 memory foam topper thinking maybe it was too firm, but that just made it worse! The real problem is there is absolutely no support, and the tiny, thin layer of "memory foam" is such a light density that it does nothing but make you sink into the rock hard base foam while providing no support. We switched back to our old mattress that was starting to sag and was making our backs tired (the reason for the switch), within 30 minutes both our backs felt remarkably better. A few days later I tried the memory foam mattress again, same pattern as before... first night: amazing, Second: Okay, but by the fourth night I felt like an 80 year old with arthritis in my spine! (I'm 24) I could barely walk or do anything, again laid in our old bed within 30 minutes my back felt much better, like it was the first time it rested in days.
I also want to add that we are not heavy people, I weight 115lb and my husband 170lb.
Thank goodness Amazon makes it easy to return things, we just called them up and they are arranging with a company to come and pick the stupid thing up. Good riddance. We will be trying one from Costco for a LOT more, but still significantly cheaper than Tempurpedic, and has 7lb density foam like the most expensive of Tempurpedics. If it gives us good sleep, it will be money well spent. I hope it gives us better results.
Save your time, energy and back... Don't buy this crappy hunk of foam.
EDIT: Oh a tip, in case you do decide to still buy it, we noticed some of the edges weren't "inflating" and realized it was due to the cover being glued (or something) to the foam itself, you can easily pull up on the cover to release it and the foam will expand. We thought something was wrong with it at first, but it was probably a side effect of vacuum sealing them.
I was skeptical about trying a memory foam mattress having only slept on a Tempurpedic a few times. However, I found the Amazon reviews to be largely true and suggest you read them for yourself. It was due to the many wonderful reviews that I took the plunge and bought this mattress. I will add a few things about this mattress for those of you who have a bad back.
This mattress is very good for someone, like me, who has scoliosis or moderate sciatic pain. I am a fairly active person and have had to "pop" my hips for years before I go to bed. SInce getting this mattress, I have essentially stopped that. I no longer have to crack my back every morning. Is this one of those mattresses where you sink into a giant pillow? No. Is it firm? Yes and no. It's firm in that people with no back pain will think it's a rock. It's soft in that you slowly sink into it and you will get the support you need.
Sadly, I was one of those unlucky ones whose mattress did not fully lie flat. Frankly, I don't care because my sheets end up covering it and I'm too lazy to send it back. In any case, I have no idea how I'd send this back since it came shrink wrapped. Two of the corners are raised about 2.5 inches and the other two are up about an inch or so.
Finally, as for smell, it does slowly go away. I have a sensitive nose (I should have been a perfume nose) but I febreze'd the mattress and let it sit for a good three days before I slept on it. It has now been over a month and I only rarely get a faint waft of that yummy memory foam smell.
Overall, I am pleased with my new mattress. I expect it will hold up to my sleep like the dead ways for many years to come. I am deducting one star for the upturned corners and because there is still a small dip in the very middle of the mattress near the edge that will not go away.
