I love this device. This purchase was for a fit it that went through the laundry. The device calculates how many steps you do daily, how many stairs you climbed, how many calories you burned and it monitors your sleep quality. It automatically uploads this to the fit bit program, and inspires me to be more active. There is also a scale that is available which keeps track of your weight, and allows you to reach goals.
Love our new FitBit's Good deal on two also. It is great to see how active we are during the day and how we sleep too. Amazing, my husband climbs so many stairs in a day!
I recommend it to anyone looking for a way to track calories and activity level. Links well with both PC and Mac computers.
A friend of mine bought a fitbit ultra and loved it. After a month he still loved it. I had been thinking about buying something like this to encourage myself to walk more so I bought one. He set it up for me so the computer part works and it gives me pretty numbers and pictures on the gadget itself, but I cannot get it to give me accurate values. I walk trails, mostly flat coastal trails with mileage markers. I walked my neighborhood trail which is 4.5 miles and fitbit said it was 6.3 miles. So much for entering your height, etc. and fitbit's default being fairly accurate. I often walk with friends so it's not like I have some unusual step length!
I figured out my step length using the instructions on several user sites, first measuring a short distance in the house and later counting my steps between half-mile markers on my usual trail, entering a hash mark in a small notebook every hundred steps so I wouldn't lose count. The step length I got from the short walk and the half-mile walk were very close, and I entered it on fitbit's site. (I'd like to know how the step length I got compares with fitbit's default, but I can't find a list of fitbit's default values anywhere.) Today I walked a new trail with someone who has a smartphone. Her phone's GPS tracker said we had gone 0.78 mile the first time we checked, and fitbit said I had taken enough steps to equal 1.25 miles. It got worse from there.
But I can see why my friend likes it so much; he's just trying to walk more at the university where he works or by parking at the far end of the supermarket's lot. If it's telling him he has walked 50% more than he really has, that's very comforting -- without being true in the least.
I'm going to give the fitbit through the Thanksgiving weekend when I'll be able to walk five days straight, fussing with it some more, finding some more websites, and seeing if I can get it to really measure the distances I walk. (Hint: sitting at my desk for 10 hours with two restroom breaks and one walk down the hall to heat up my lunch does not equal 0.83 mile!) I'm going to start tomorrow by checking it often; someone said his was tracking steps even when he was driving! If I can't get it to give me real mileage, heck +/- 5% of the real mileage would be okay, it's being returned.
So don't buy this thinking it's going to be easy to use if you want the truth about your mileage.
